96 to 04 Mustang install instructions

Meter4it Eng.                                                     Update: 1/16/05
Installation of the Sequential / Chase unit, 1996 to 04 Mustang

A) Test blinker and Trim removal:

1.      Observe lights on the left and right side to make sure all lights are working.

2.      Remove luggage compartment trim. Try unscrewing plastic retainers or use wide blade screwdrivers to pry off plastic retainers from the threaded stud.

3.      If using the supplied Scotchlok connectors you may install all Spade terminals at this time onto the Sequence / Chase unit wires. NOTE: Leave connectors on the Grey and Blue wires.

B) Driver side connections:

    1.      On driver side, locate the two wires (Green with Orange strip) by the tail light connector.
    A) Cut only one wire 1 inch from the connector on the tail light side, look at picture above.
    B) Turn on Left blinker and make note of which light still works. This light socket will replace the inboard light socket. TIP: Use tape and place it on the lens to help you remember!

    2.      Remove the four nuts that secure the taillight.

    3.      Remove the inboard light socket (next to the license plate) and place it in the middle reflector of the taillight.

    4.      From step 1B, only if middle light is still working, place that light socket into the inboard reflector.

    5.      From step 1B, only if outboard light is still working place that light socket into the inboard reflector.

    6.      Place the last light socket into the outboard reflector.

    7.      With the Sequence / Chase unit in the trunk (Driver side): Install one Scotchlok on the Green/Orange wire that was cut and still attached to the rear taillight connector.

    8.      Plug in the Green wire to the Scotchlok.

    9.      Install one Scotchlok onto the other Green/ Orange wire that goes to the taillight.

    10.  Plug in the Purple wire to the Scotchlok.

    11.  Using an awl (sharp object) puncture the rubber seal that seals the taillight harness to the sheet metal.

    12.  Insert the Blue wire through that hole. Caution: Using finger to support rubber seal while puncturing hole will cause pain!

    13.  Remove the rubber wire seal on the middle light socket. (The only one that is Grey in color and has two wires!)

    14.  Insert the terminal that is already on the blue wire into the empty hole on the light socket. Ensure terminal is fully seated for positive connection.

    15.  Cut the light socket rubber seal so that it will allow for the blue wire. Reinstall the rubber seal on to the light socket.

    16.  Reinstall the left taillight onto the car. MAKE SURE NO WIRES GET IN-BETWEEN THE TAILLIGHT BOLT/ SCREW AND THE METAL, this will cause your fuse to blow. If this happens remove the taillight, tape the bare wire and verify operation before reinstalling the taillight.

    17.  Install a Scotchlok onto the black wire between the harness connector and sheet metal.  Look at picture above!

    18.  Connect the Sequence/ Chase black wire to this one.

    19.  Locate the harness that supplies the trunk light and 3rd brake light. Follow it to the driver side below the trunk lid hinge. There should be a connector there.

    20.  Install a Scotchlok on the Light Green/ Orange wire.

    21.  Connect the Red wire from the Sequence/ Chase unit to the Scotchlok using spade connector. TIP: Can use other 12Vdc supply, should be rated for 10amps! TIP: Hearing relays click while connecting power wire is normal!

C) Passenger side connection:

1.      On Passenger side, locate the two wires (Orange with light blue) by the tail light connector.
D) Cut only one wire 1 inch from the connector on the tail light side, look at picture above, wire is already cut.
E) Turn on Right blinker and make note of which light still works. This light socket will replace the inboard light socket. TIP: Use tape and place it on the lens to help you remember!

2.      Remove the four nuts that secure the taillight.

3.      Remove the inboard light socket (next to the license plate) and place it in the middle reflector of the taillight.

4.      From step 1E, Only if middle light is still working, place that light socket into the inboard reflector.

5.      From step 1E, Only if outboard light is still working place that light socket into the inboard reflector.

6.      Place the last light socket into the outboard reflector.

7.      Install one Scotchlok to the Orange/ light Blue wire that was cut and still attached to the rear taillight connector.

8.      Plug in the Orange wire to the Scotchlok.

9.      Install one Scotchlok onto the other Orange/ light Blue wire that goes to the taillight.

10.  Plug in the Pink wire to the Scotchlok.

11.  Using an awl (sharp object) puncture the rubber seal that seals the taillight harness to the sheet metal.

12.  Insert the Grey wire through that hole. Caution: Using finger to support rubber seal while puncturing hole will cause pain!

13.  Remove the rubber wire seal on the middle light socket.

14.  Insert the terminal that is already on the Grey wire into the empty hole on the light socket. Ensure terminal is fully seated for positive connection.

15.  Cut the light socket rubber seal so that it will allow for the Grey wire. Reinstall the rubber seal on to the light socket.

16.  Reinstall the right taillight onto the car. MAKE SURE NO WIRES GET IN-BETWEEN THE TAILLIGHT BOLT/ SCREW AND THE METAL, this will cause your fuse to blow. If this happens remove the taillight, tape the bare wire and verify operation before reinstalling the taillight.

17.  All wires should be connected at this point.

D) Flasher install:

If you purchased the flasher with the kit follow D1 if not then D2

D1) Installing modified Flasher;

1.      If you purchased the flasher with the kit.

2.      Locate and remove the flasher. 99-04 Driver side close to the console and behind the dash panel, left of the radio. 96-98 behind the fuse panel. It is Yellow in color. Most are held in place with a clip, use a small screwdriver to release the clip. Remove flasher from the plug.

3.      Install replacement flasher.

D2) Modifying your Flasher;

1.      Remove flasher.

2.      Looking at the connector side of the flasher. Pull on one of the electrical prongs using small needle nose pliers. At the same time use a small screwdriver to pry on the yellow retaining edges until it releases. You will need to repeat this two more times and the yellow enclosure will separate from the circuit board.

3.      Locate the capacitor on the flasher; solder the capacitor included in the kit to the capacitor on the flasher. NOTE: YOU MUST MATCH POLARITIES OR CAPACITOR FAILURE WILL RESULT. Notice the gray strip with the “-“ on the side of the capacitor indicates, this indicates the groundside. This lead will be on the flasher connector side. Piggy back the supplied capacitor to the factory capacitor. Look at picture below.

4.      Reinstall yellow enclosure and plug flasher back into plug.

5.      You’re done!

E) Ready for test:

1.      With drivers side turn signal on (NOTE some lights might not be working at this time) using a small object (ball point pen) push the black button located in the access hole of the Sequence/ Chase unit. This puts it in Calibration mode.  NOTE: Older models used Red button.

2.      All three lights should blink together two or more times (depending on how long the button is pushed) and then start Sequence/ Chase depending on selected mode.

3.      Now turn on the Passenger side signal and the right side should calibrate itself after three flashes.

4.      Following chart on Sequence / Chase unit sticker you can select between Sequence, Chase, or factory (all 3 lights together). Depends on your taste.

5.      If everything was connected correctly you can install trunk panels. Now you are ready to show your stuff!

F) Changing mode of operation:

NOTE: Reference to access hole assumes hole is facing you, flange is on the bottom side, and wire loom is to your left.

  1. For CHASE, remove any jumper that is in a vertical orientation. To store the jumper you can replace it in a horizontal plane on either of the two jumpers.

  2. For SEQUENCE, place jumper on the right two pins in a vertical plane.

  3. For FACTORY (all 3 lights together), place the jumper on the left two pins in a vertical plane. .

Most common problems;

1) Middle light does not work:

Driver’s side middle light does not work:

Make sure the metal insert on the Blue wire is fully inserted into the light socket. Refer to DRIVER SIDE step 14 of install instructions.

Passenger side middle light does not work:

Make sure the metal insert on the Grey wire is fully inserted into the light socket. Refer to PASSENGER SIDE step 14 of install instructions.

2) Inboard light is the only light that blinks:

Driver’s side inboard light blinks but the middle and outboard does not:

The Green wire from the unit is not connected to the Green wire with Orange dots (factory wire). Verify connection refer to DRIVER SIDE steps 7and 8.  Without this wire connected the unit cannot get the request for turn signal or brake.

Passenger side inboard light blinks but the middle and outboard does not:

The Orange wire from the unit is not connected to the Orange wire with Blue dots (factory wire). Verify connection refer to PASSENGER SIDE step 7 and 8.  Without this wire connected the unit cannot get the request for turn signal or brake.

3) Inboard lights are the only lights that work Left and Right:

A) Recheck connection of Red wire in step DRIVER SIDE 21 through 23.  Using a Test Light or a Volt Meter Probe Red wire to see if you have 12Vdc at the Red wire.

B) Recheck connection of Black wire in step DRIVER SIDE 19 and 20. As with the Red wire if this connection is not made or made poorly the unit will not function.

4) Every time the turn signal is used the fuse blows for the turn signals:

96 to 98 IP Fuse panel # 1 fuse 15amp (located under dash left of the steering column) 99 to 04 Central Junction Box #18 fuse 15amp (located under dash left of the steering column) Remove both taillights and make sure the Green/ Orange stripe (driver side) Orange/ Blue stripe wire (passenger side) wire did not get in between the taillight bolt and the body of the car causing a short.

5) Every time the turn signal is used the fuse blows for the courtesy lights:

96 to 98 IP Fuse panel # 8 fuse 10amp (located under dash left of the steering column) 99 to 04 Central Junction Box #7 fuse 10amp (located under dash left of the steering column) Remove both taillights and make sure the Blue wire (driver side) and or Grey wire (Passenger side) did not get in between the taillight bolt and the body of the car causing a short

NOTE: If changing from factory to another mode you must calibrate both left and right sides. In short the unit will be in the calibrate mode after removal, all you will need to do is to let the left and then right side blinkers cycle a minimum of three times and your done
